Early Years at Northburn

We are excited to welcome you and your child to our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Northburn Primary School. Our EYFS team are dedicated to creating a warm, supportive, and engaging environment where children can develop a love of learning and build the foundations for their future education.

Our EYFS Approach

Our EYFS curriculum is designed to nurture curiosity, creativity and independence, providing children with a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Through high-quality teaching and purposeful play, we support their social, emotional and academic development. Rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, our balanced approach ensures each child receives the right level of challenge and support across all seven areas of learning.

Areas of Learning

The EYFS curriculum is structured around seven key areas of learning:

Prime Areas:
- Communication and Language: Encouraging speaking, listening, and understanding skills.
- Physical Development: Developing coordination, encouraging movement, and healthy lifestyles.
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development: Building confidence, friendships, relationships, and emotional well-being.

Specific Areas:

- Literacy: Early reading and writing skills through phonics and storytelling.
- Mathematics: Exploring and understanding numbers, shapes and problem-solving.
- Understanding the World: Exploring nature, communities, and technology.
- Expressive Arts and Design: Encouraging creativity through music, art, and imaginative play.

Learning Through Play

Play is at the heart of our approach, as we know that children learn best when they are actively engaged in hands-on experiences. Our indoor and outdoor learning environments are designed to inspire curiosity, imagination, and problem-solving skills. Through structured and free play, children develop resilience, social skills, and a love of learning.

Forest School

As part of our commitment to outdoor learning, we offer Forest School sessions, allowing children to develop confidence, independence and a deep connection with nature. These sessions provide opportunities for hands-on experiences, including den building, nature exploration, and creative outdoor play, fostering a sense of adventure and curiosity.

Our Staff

Our Nursery teacher is Mrs Farrier and our Reception teacher is Mrs Waters.

Our passionate and caring EYFS team works closely with children and families to create a warm and inclusive environment. We value strong partnerships with parents and carers, keeping you informed and involved in your child’s progress every step of the way.

We work together to support your child in many ways including:
- Regular Updates: We share progress through online learning journals, parent meetings and informal chats.
- Workshops & Events: We offer sessions to help parents understand how learning happens in EYFS.
- Home Learning: Ideas and activities are provided to extend learning at home.

Important Dates & Events in EYFS

Throughout the year, children in EYFS take part in a variety of special events and celebrations which enhance their learning experience. These include:

- Stay and Play Sessions: Opportunities for parents to engage in their child’s learning.
- Seasonal Celebrations: Events such as Remembrance day, Christmas performances, Easter activities, and summer fun days.
- World Book Day: Encouraging creativity and a love of reading.
- Educational Visits and Visitors: Bringing learning to life through real-world experiences.
- Sports and Outdoor Activity Days: Promoting physical development and teamwork.

The Characteristics of Effective Learning

The characteristics of effective learning outline how children engage with the world around them. 'Playing and Exploring' encourages curiosity and enthusiasm as they investigate and experience new things. 'Active Learning' fosters motivation, perseverance, and focus when tackling challenges. 'Creating and Thinking Critically' helps children develop their own ideas, make connections, and solve problems. By embedding these characteristics into our daily practice at Northburn, our staff create a stimulating environment where children feel safe enough to explore, take risks and develop resilience.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Northburn Primary School EYFS, where every child is encouraged to flourish and reach their full potential.
